Brought in for a quick exam and weighed at 1,148g (down 3%), this decrease is most likely due to an increase in activity since being moved to the aviary. Since it is not greater than 10%, we are not yet concerned. Banding wound on R-lateral leg from 2/14 is scabbed over and healing slowly and will be left to continue healing. Saw some slight erythema and a circular cutaneous lesion on the ventral aspect of the L-foot, most likely due to overuse. But the extra skin on the lesion easily rubbed off and is not currently a concern.

Acupuncture was performed on 124's left leg. Three needles were placed laterally on the thigh, 2 needles medially on the thigh, and 1 needle around the dorsal pelvis. Electroacupuncture was performed as well, attaching the electrodes to the lateral needles. 124 was hooded, and no anesthesia/sedation was required.

We also performed PROM of the left leg and massaged the musculature. The foot "donut" was removed and replaced with a ball bandage using gauze and vetwrap.

Physical Therapy for Left Leg

Began with massage and PROM. The left leg was significantly more stiff/tense compared to the right leg. With >50 repetitions of extension and contraction the stiffness was somewhat reduced. The left digits were in a state of constant flexion and could not be fully extended while p was awake. Noted some loss of scales on the dorsal aspect of the left fott, likely from dragging.

Anesthetized 124, induced and maintained on isoflurane via face mask to be able to extend the digits. Did massage and PROM of the digits, then placed a foot support (pool noodle) to maintain the digits in an extended position with the hope that this may allow for some weight bearing on the left limb. The support was secured in place with white tape and vetwrap externally. Recovered from anesthesia uneventfully.

2023-124 was anesthetized using isoflurane via face mask for an EMG diagnostic procedure of the left leg. P made a honking noise with respiration for ~30 seconds during induction. Monitored visually and with Doppler. Once the procedure was completed, isoflurane anesthesia was discontinued and 2023-124 recovered uneventfully.

Findings: Most muscles tested (consisting of medial and lateral flexors and extensors) did not yield any abnormalities, but the femorotibialis medius muscle showed spontaneous activity consisting of positive sharp waves and fibrillations. These findings are suggestive of denervation of this muscle, which is innervated by the femoral nerve. Other muscles that are innervated by the femoral nerve did not show any abnormalities.

Conclusions: Femoral nerve pathology vs. focal femoral nerve denervation of femorotibialis medius, muscular abnormality less likely

Recommendations from neuro:
-Continue laser therapy, add-in acupuncture if possible
-Incorporate passive range of motion of the left limb
-Perform weight-shifting exercises
-Use a sling to support upper body during exercises
-Continue physical therapy efforts for one month and reassess

Patient was sedated with 0.48 mL midazolam IN and 0.05 mL dexmedetomidine IM.
A whole body CT without contrast is available for interpretation, dated 12/28/23.
No fractures or luxations are identified with the vertebral column. No abnormal hyperattenuating regions are
identified within the brain parenchyma or spinal cord. The beak and cranium are unremarkable. The lungs and
cardiovascular structures are unremarkable. There is a large volume of bones within the proventriculus. The
coelom is unremarkable with no evidence of free air or effusion. No fractures or luxations are identified with
the osseous structures of the bilateral wings or pelvic limbs.
Conclusions:
Unremarkable whole body CT. The cause of the left hindlimb weakness is not identified.

Plan to continue cage rest and NSAIDS and monitor progression as patient has started to stand.

Intake Bloodwork Interpretation:
Increased PCV likely due to hydration. Bloodwork noted many smudged cells on slides which could alter the WBC count, thus accounting for the low WBC count. Increased heterophils likley due to inflammation.

On chemistry, decreased glucose is likely an artifact due to prolonged time between collection and centrifuge. Increased AST can be attributed to muscle injury.

Albumin is low likely due to acute phase reaction due to inflammation. Calcium binds to albumin thus decreasing calcium when albumin is low. Increased beta suggest acute inflammation. Moderate marked increases in this fraction can be observed with nephritis, hepatitis, dermtitis, and mycotic infection. Increases may also be observed with sarcocystosis and chronic chlamydiosis as well as mycobacteriosis. Follow up EPH may have prognositic value in this case.
